CAS for the month of October 2011

October was very similar to September in terms of CAS as the same activities continued. I did however get  sick with chicken pox halfway through the month and therefore was forced to miss two weeks of schools. I missed a lot in terms of CAS in these two weeks especially regarding community service as i was unable to visit the children at the hospital. The SAISA girls Volleyball tournament was also held in the month of october.
Football
Football training continued as before on every tuesday, friday and saturday. At this point football training was still optional but i attended every session because i am dedicated and committed to improving my skills before the tournament arrives as well as work collaboratively with all the players that will constitute the final team.
We worked on improving various aspects of our fitness and skill in order to get ready for the competitive season because we knew that training for that would be gruelling and intense. We also had one match against Colombo International School which was just a practice match in which everyone who tried out for the team got a chance to play. The match was quite intense even though it was just a training match we considered it as a normal practice game and so we plaeyd our hearts out. It was a  decent match for me since i scored the first goal for our team but soon our team went 2-1 down and none of our attacks worked. We still kept trying and in the final few minutes we were awarded a penalty for a challenge inside the box on Karl. He converted the penalty into a goal with ease and brought us back on level terms. The match was a tie at the end of the 60 minutes and was taken to a penalty shootout which we won. I was injured during the match and even though i continued to play until the end i decided not to take a penalty due to my injury. Eventually we won on penalties which was a good morale boost for them and it proved to us that we could work collaboratively in order to achieve our goals.

This practice match gave us an idea early on before the season started as to where our team needed to improve and also helped increase my awareness of my own strengths and areas of growth.

Community Service
In october, the cleft palate organization was in session every week working on organising the battle of the bands concert and making decisions about the venue, the duration, the price of the ticket and other such decisions. This month we also decided to go visit the children who are about to undergo or have already undergone surgery. I took initiative as the leader of the group and called the hospital in order to arrange for us to visit the children. Once a dat was set, a circular regarding the trip was sent out to the parents of the students involved in the group.

Sadly, the day of the trip i was not in school because i was sick with chicken pox that week. The trip however did take place and the rest of the group visited the hospital with the co-leader Rasmus leading it in my place. The following pictures were taken by my peers on the trip.
SAISA Girls Volleyball tournament

The SAISA girls volleyball tournament took place in OSC this year and me and Karl were asked to help out with the organisation of it. We had helped with the organisation of the previous SAISA tournament hosted at our school too so this time it gave us a chance to increase our awareness of our own strengths. It also helped us develop our organisational skills in anticipation of the upcoming battle of the bands event. We worked collaboratively with the school administration and the girl's team in order to set up a social on the first night of the tournament. It consisted of moving table tennis tables and high jump mats from the gym to the auditorium but we managed to get it all set up in time.
The night went smoothly and we were there for general supervision throughout the night.

Battle of the Bands
The month of october was the main month for making final decisions on the battle of the bands concert and starting the organisation process. Every week the group would meet and different people were given different responsibilities like designing the tickets and the posters etc. The Co-ordinator and I made many important decisions during this period in relation to the event such as the date for auditions, the number of bands, the duration of the concert and many more.It was quite difficult and the organisation of the actual event was shaping up to be a mammoth task. But i persevered with my planning and stayed committed to organising the concert the way it was planned. Being the organisational head of somethign as large as this concert was a new challenge for me and it helped grow in areas i didnt know i even possessed skills and developed skills i already had. Bringing together a team of about 10-15 students to work collaboratively was one of the key aspects in the success of this concert. The following pictures show the ticket and poster that we desgined as a team putting individual ideas together. I helped with the poster and the co-leader Rasmus supervised the designing of the ticket.

A raffle was also planned in order to raise even more funds. Putting all these different aspects together was quite challenging but it seemed to be coming together after spending many hours outside of the meetings in order to get everything done. The audition date was decided as the 14th of November. The planning carried on into the month of november as the 26th got closer and closer.
