FINAL CAS SUMMARY

Learning Outcomes Achieved? Nature/Location of Evidence
Increased awareness of their own strengths and areas of growth Yes Over the last two years I have learnt a lot about myself as a sportsman, musician, leader. I took part in thinks I have never tried before and learnt a lot in many different fields. One of the main ones was as a striker in football.
SAISA boys football tournament
Undertaken new challenges Yes I took part in so many new activities, some that I did not even know I could do. It was also the first time I have been the leader of a community service group and organized a large event like the Battle of the Bands Battle of the Bands
Planned and initiated activities Yes The Battle of the bands was one of the biggest events I have ever organized. It was my idea to host it and I made many of the major decisions in regard to it. Also being a senior I helped plan activities in various areas like musical performances and training exercises during team practices. During SAISA events held at OSC I was always on the planning committee for the social events etc. SAISA girls football at OSC
Worked collaboratively with others Yes In the last 2 years I have been a part of many teams and committees and have worked extremely well with my peers. I was part of the football and track team and the cleft palate organization for 2 years, many performances like a fashion show, drama productions and musical performances all of which required me to work collaboratively with others. I worked collaboratively with my whole grade during Week Without walls in grade 11
Week Without Walls
Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities Yes I have stayed committed to all the activities that took part in and never left anything incomplete. I was part of the same athletic teams, community service groups and other groups throughout the two years during good times and bad. Especially in football I always had a never say die attitude. SAISA boys football(senior year)
Engaged with issues of global importance Yes My main connection to this was through the community service groups as not only did I lead one but I also took part in events planned by the other groups to help them raise funds for their groups. For example I took part in the events organized by the Hope for Kids group both years.
Charity concert held by Hope for kids in 2010
Considered the ethical implications of their actions Yes While trying to help patients with cleft palate I realized that trying to visit the little children was unethical because there was not much we could do other than just look at them as they were too young for any activities. While representing OSC during SAISA tournaments and outside school I considered the ethical implications of my actions and the effect on the image of my school and therefore never did anything that would ruin our school’s name.
New ways to helps cleft palate patients
Developed new skills Yes I developed many new skills over the last two years. Mainly in the creative and leadership aspect. In music I was just a beginner at the guitar but over the last two years I have learnt so many new things which are enough to put up instrumental performances on stage. Drama was a completely new experience for me and I performed lead roles in the 12th grade productions both years. As for leadership, this was the first time I had been chosen to lead a community service group and an athletic team.

CAS for the month of January 2012

January was the beginning of a new semester and now that many of the main events of senior year like football and battle of the bands were behind me it was time to concentrate on my academics. I had just completed sending in all my college applications and now it was time for Internal assessments. However i did manage to do quite a lot in terms of CAS, maybe not at such a large scale as before but i was still involved in many activities. One of the main things was training for the track and field tournament that was scheduled to be held in March.

Creativity
Singing at Honor Roll Assembly (creativity)
Camie and i performed a musical piece once again at the honor roll assembly. It helped us develop our musical skills further as well undertake new challenges as we had to transpose the song in order to be in tune with Camie's voice. We had only a couple of days to practice but we stayed back after school many times to practice the song and make the necessary changes to it which shows our commitment to music.

Action
Even though i finished i continued to go for community football on saturdays in order to keep fit and also because i am committed to developing my skills and get better so that some day i may be able to play at atleast the semi-professional level.

Also Track and field training had begun and having missed a few training sessions because of exams i was eager to start practice as soon as possible. I attended almost every training during the month of January. I decided to develop a new skill this year which was high jump. I learnt the techniques and decided to stay committed to learning this new skill and persisted throughout training even though at times i did not understand the technique.I also got a chance to develop my leadership skills as i was chosen as the team captain.

Service:
In terms of service decided to go visit the hospital where the patients got their operations done mainly with the purpose of meeting the doctor to have a discussion with him about how we could help other than just raising funds. We also walked through the wards where the young babies were either recovering from a surgery or waiting for one. To me it seemed quite unethical to walk around the wards just staring at the patients as if they were showpieces. It raised doubts in my mind whether we should be looking at them and taking photographs of them and therefore we did not stay in the wards for long and refrained from taking any pictures. When we spoke to the doctor we figured out that the best way for us to help them would be to spread awareness about cleft palate, the work at the hospital and the ways in which people can help these patients and their families. We decided that we would make pamphlets, videos and powerpoint presentationsin order to spread awareness to as many people as possible.

CAS for the month of December 2011

December was another month which was filled with extra-curricular activities and helped me achieve many of critical outcomes of the CAS program. The main highlight of this month was the SAISA boys football tournament of course for which we had all worked so hard.Other than than there was so the "OSC's got talent" show in which i performed twice. In regards to service, we had just held the biggest fundraiser of the year at school and so for now our goal was to gather all the funds and donate them to the hospital where the patients were.Other than that community service took the back seat for this month.

SAISA Boys U-19 Football tournament!
Finally the sporting event we had been looking forward to all year had finally arrived! it was a long journey to Dhaka but most of the team was used to it and was prepared to handle it this year having gone to the same destination for the tournament last year. There was one major setback the day before we left for the tournament and that was that our central defender who was key in our strategies got suspended from school and was unable to travel. There was a sense of dejavu from last year but we were determined to make things work so some players had to take up positions out of their comfort zones which they did willingly for the team The day we arrived in Dhaka we were dropped straight to the hosts houses so we could relax and prepare for the big day ahead.

The first day of the tournament was relatively easy for us in terms of number of matches as we had only one. We were very excited and ready to give it our all as we knew we had the rest of the day to relax and recuperate. The match was against the school from Lahore who were known to be championship material and this was evident as their team had many seniors. We went into the match confident but a little confused as to our individual roles in the team because there were many last minute changes. We played fairly well and worked collaboratively in the first half frustrating our opponents and keeping the score at 0-0. Karl our goalkeeper and captain was key in this half to maintaining the score line. The second half however was a completely different story, Lahore's pure quality and skill shined through and we lost the match 3-0. At the end of the match we were quite disheartened with our performance and were embarrassed of the position that we thought we would come in if we kept playing the way we played in that match. We knew many changes had to be made and luckily we had the rest of the day to work with our coaches and come up with a new strategy. Personally i was disappointed with myself for not having created many chances or scoring a goal but i knew that i had to stay committed to my goals and i would persevere. I worked together with the other attacking players trying to devise a strategy for our next game and developed my skills as a leader and a footballer.

On the second day we had our first match against ASB and we went into it distracted and still slightly disappointed from our previous performance which quickly led to us being beaten easily in defense twice and them having a 2-0 lead. This was the lowest point of our tournament and it was at this point that the whole team collectively decided that we were not going to sit back and be dominated in this way. We came out very strong in the second half and i scored a goal halfway through the second half. After my goal there was a resurgence in team spirit and we dominated the game completely giving ASB no chances. Unfortunately we could not get another goal but that did not matter as after the game team spirit was high. We had finally found our rhythm and were playing in the positions we were suited for. The next game was against Karachi and it was complete Gecko domination throughout with the final result as 3-1 and i scored 2 goals while assisting the other. It was a very good morale boosting game and very important in terms of keeping us in contention for the title.

The Third day we had to play AIS from Chennai in order to qualify for the semi-finals. Last year they had beaten us in the 5/6th place match and so we were determined to take revenge. The game was fairly evenly matched for majority of the first half but we decided to turn the tempo up which led to a goal from a free-kick taken by yariq and scored by me. After that it was attack after attack from OSC but eventually one counter attack from AISC was able to penetrate our defense and they equalised. At this point we pushed even harder and close to the end of the game i shot the ball towards goal and it came off the bar and landed at Maisoon's feet who managed to put the ball past the disorientated goalkeeper with ease. We held on to our lead quite comfortably and progressed to the semi-finals.We had to play Lahore once again in the semi-finals which was our greatest challenge so far. We had seen them demolish the other teams with ease. Our only hope was that we had managed to hold them relatively well in the first game for the first half and we believed that if we could do the same now then we had a chance of winning it. We went into the game believing that it was all or nothing and we played our hearts out. Karl was exceptional in this game as goalkeeper handling a barrage of shots but not letting anything past for the first half. Again at half time the score was 0-0. We were holding the tournament favorites and this gave us a lot of confidence.Sadly after an intense second half Lahore managed to outplay us once again and we were knocked out of the tournament. But we held our heads high because we knew that we had given the probably champions the toughest fight yet which turned out to be their lowest scoring game in the whole tournament including the final which they won 4-0. Now we had to face AIS Dhaka, the host team in the 3rd/4th place match. This was another intense match. Even though we dominated them for the first half and i scored one of my best individual goals of all time, the score at half time was only 1-0. They capitalized on our inability to finish all our chances and by halfway through the second half they led by 2 goals. I was determined not to have our team lose to Dhaka again like last year and so i ran myself into the ground working hard and trying to create chances. My hard work was awarded in that i scored the two goals that got us back to level terms with Dhaka a few minutes before time. I was very proud of myself for having persevered and not given up when all hope seemed lost. I also achieved one of my goals which was to score a hat-trick. The match finally went to penalties where sadly we lost because some of the players who had scored regularly during practice could not keep their nerves and luck was not on their side either. IT was disappointing to lose on the basis of penalties but we were proud of ourselves for having worked hard and achieved 4th place which is one of the best positions OSC has gotten in recent years.

All in all the tournament was a tremendous experience for me as i learnt a lot about myself, my skills and about working as a team and being calm under pressure. It is a tournament i will never forget as i developed new skills and improved old ones. The team was committed and worked collaboratively and undertook every challenge that came our way.

OSC's Got Talent!
OSC's got talent was a talent show organised by the SGA and it consisted of many different performances of dance and music. I did two performances in this show, one with Skylord which was a guitar instrumental medley and the other was an acoustic cover of the song "She will be loved" by Maroon 5  with Camie.
I showed perseverance and commitment to this activity because i had to spend a lot of my time rehearsing and practicing for the show. It also gave me a chance to further develop my guitar skills as i did both an instrumental with Skylord and improvisation with Camie. A new challenge for me was the guitar instrumental because i had never performed one before without any other instruments to support it. Me and Skylord  worked collaboratively to decide the songs we would put together and how the medley would go. It was the first time it would be just me and him on stage with no one else supporting us so it was daunting but we managed to do quite well. For me and Camie this kind of performance has become like second nature because we have done it so many times in the past with other songs. We were aware of our strengths in this area and so we decided to stick to it to put up a good performance

The show went well and Skylord and I won second place overall and Camie and i won first place overall! It was very special for me having won the top two spots with both my performances

CAS for the month of November

November was a very productive month in terms of CAS as some of our major IB assessment were out of the way and less attention could be paid to academics for a change. It was a very busy and stressful month with the practice for the SAISA boys football tournament now in full swing as well the Battle of the Bands concert that was held on the 26th.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS!!
After hours of planning and preparation, after auditions and everything that entails setting up a massive event like this, the 26th finally arrived. I anticipated that this was going to be a very long and stressful day and that it would take all day to make sure that the event went smoothly and that being the leader i would have to work extremely hard to make that possible. The day of the event, we decided that we would start sound check for the bands at 10 a.m. so that every band had enough time to test the sound system. Me and Mr.Pradeep ended up staying there the whole day until the beginning of the event as we made final changes to the auditorium and the sound system etc.

In the evening we set up the ticket stands and the drink stalls as people on the organization committee filtered in and started assuming the roles they had been assigned. My main role was to collaborate with everyone and make sure that everything went smoothly. It helped me develop my organisational and communication skills and it was a very tiring job but one that needed to be carried out and properly in order fort the event to go off smoothly. As the show began i ran from the auditorium to the entrance to the green room to the balcony passing along messages and making sure if everything was functioning properly. During the concert we had prepared a presentation that highlighted our various efforts in terms of service in this group as well as important information about cleft lip and palate disease to raise awareness amongst the crowd. It was a very tiring and long night but it was quite enjoyable and all the effort we all put into it was worth it. After the awards ceremony, the whole group came together and helped wrap up the concert.

The next day i had a short meeting with Mr.Pradeep about the funds that we had raised through ticket sales and sponsorships. Overall we raised 324,000 SLRwhich is a very large sum and can help quite a few children and their families. At this point i took a while to consider the ethical implications of the whole concert and the funds we had raised. We made decisions on how the funds were to be rationed to the patients and how we could play a part in helping them now that we had these funds. Cleft Lip and Palate is an issue of global importance and i was very proud to have helped lead an organization to bring about awareness and raise funds to help those afflicted with this disease.

Football Training

By this point in the training season our team had been selected and we had been playing practice matches every week. Our team was working together quite well but we were not too pleased with the results of our practice games because we were not playing as well as we knew we could. We managed to win most of our games but there was one draw and one loss as well. We lost 3-2 to elizabeth moir and even though it was a tough defeat it was a good experience because they were a very good side and we expected to face more teams like them at SAISA. We evaluated the game along with the coaches and figured out our weaknesses and i personally decided on areas where i needed to develop my skills in order to help take my team to victory.
Sporting my No. 7 Jersey
Almost every player in our team was completely committed to winning the tournament this year, especially the seniors and we were quite confident about our team. I had been in decent form throughout the practice games and was scoring regularly and trying different positions. I decided that for this season of football my goals would be to score a hattrick (3 goals) in atleast one game in SAISA as well consistently score and assist goals  in every game unlike last year where at times i was unable to provide good results in some games. I hoped to score more than 5 goals in the tournament to help my team earn a respectable place in the tournament and maybe even win it! Being a senior, i also aided the coaches and the captain in team selections and tactics on and off the pitch. I had a good feeling about the upcoming tournament and with a few adjustments to our team i thought we could prove to be a force to be reckoned with.

SAISA here we come!

CAS for the month of October 2011

October was very similar to September in terms of CAS as the same activities continued. I did however get  sick with chicken pox halfway through the month and therefore was forced to miss two weeks of schools. I missed a lot in terms of CAS in these two weeks especially regarding community service as i was unable to visit the children at the hospital. The SAISA girls Volleyball tournament was also held in the month of october.
Football
Football training continued as before on every tuesday, friday and saturday. At this point football training was still optional but i attended every session because i am dedicated and committed to improving my skills before the tournament arrives as well as work collaboratively with all the players that will constitute the final team.
We worked on improving various aspects of our fitness and skill in order to get ready for the competitive season because we knew that training for that would be gruelling and intense. We also had one match against Colombo International School which was just a practice match in which everyone who tried out for the team got a chance to play. The match was quite intense even though it was just a training match we considered it as a normal practice game and so we plaeyd our hearts out. It was a  decent match for me since i scored the first goal for our team but soon our team went 2-1 down and none of our attacks worked. We still kept trying and in the final few minutes we were awarded a penalty for a challenge inside the box on Karl. He converted the penalty into a goal with ease and brought us back on level terms. The match was a tie at the end of the 60 minutes and was taken to a penalty shootout which we won. I was injured during the match and even though i continued to play until the end i decided not to take a penalty due to my injury. Eventually we won on penalties which was a good morale boost for them and it proved to us that we could work collaboratively in order to achieve our goals.

This practice match gave us an idea early on before the season started as to where our team needed to improve and also helped increase my awareness of my own strengths and areas of growth.

Community Service
In october, the cleft palate organization was in session every week working on organising the battle of the bands concert and making decisions about the venue, the duration, the price of the ticket and other such decisions. This month we also decided to go visit the children who are about to undergo or have already undergone surgery. I took initiative as the leader of the group and called the hospital in order to arrange for us to visit the children. Once a dat was set, a circular regarding the trip was sent out to the parents of the students involved in the group.

Sadly, the day of the trip i was not in school because i was sick with chicken pox that week. The trip however did take place and the rest of the group visited the hospital with the co-leader Rasmus leading it in my place. The following pictures were taken by my peers on the trip.
SAISA Girls Volleyball tournament

The SAISA girls volleyball tournament took place in OSC this year and me and Karl were asked to help out with the organisation of it. We had helped with the organisation of the previous SAISA tournament hosted at our school too so this time it gave us a chance to increase our awareness of our own strengths. It also helped us develop our organisational skills in anticipation of the upcoming battle of the bands event. We worked collaboratively with the school administration and the girl's team in order to set up a social on the first night of the tournament. It consisted of moving table tennis tables and high jump mats from the gym to the auditorium but we managed to get it all set up in time.
The night went smoothly and we were there for general supervision throughout the night.

Battle of the Bands
The month of october was the main month for making final decisions on the battle of the bands concert and starting the organisation process. Every week the group would meet and different people were given different responsibilities like designing the tickets and the posters etc. The Co-ordinator and I made many important decisions during this period in relation to the event such as the date for auditions, the number of bands, the duration of the concert and many more.It was quite difficult and the organisation of the actual event was shaping up to be a mammoth task. But i persevered with my planning and stayed committed to organising the concert the way it was planned. Being the organisational head of somethign as large as this concert was a new challenge for me and it helped grow in areas i didnt know i even possessed skills and developed skills i already had. Bringing together a team of about 10-15 students to work collaboratively was one of the key aspects in the success of this concert. The following pictures show the ticket and poster that we desgined as a team putting individual ideas together. I helped with the poster and the co-leader Rasmus supervised the designing of the ticket.

A raffle was also planned in order to raise even more funds. Putting all these different aspects together was quite challenging but it seemed to be coming together after spending many hours outside of the meetings in order to get everything done. The audition date was decided as the 14th of November. The planning carried on into the month of november as the 26th got closer and closer.

CAS for the month of September 2011

September was a very tiring month due to the  large number of activities going on in school as well as the stress on academics and completion of assignments. Even with all the different academic stresses i still managed to take part in a few activities, make plans for a fundraiser to be held for the Cleft Palate organization and practice my guitar.

Sports Day
This year sports was organised a little differently than it was last year. Even though the sports were still the same, the older grades were all grouped together which gave each house a good opportunity to put up a strong team for each sport. There was also a swimming competition at the end. I took part in all sports except for swimming because by the time the swimming competition begun i was very tired.

First was Volleyball which is a sport i have never really played  before but i tried it in order to develop a new skill. At first i was unable to do anything right but after a few plays i started understanding the basics of playing the game properly and even scored a few points.

Next we moved on to football, kickball and basketball doing well in some and not so well in the others. I played very game i could and was dedicated to earning the blue house some points. Basketball was the hardest because i was completely worn out by the time we got to it but the team managed to muster some spirit and play all the games and score some baskets.
After all the days activities were done the blue house was declared second overall which was a proud moment for all us seniors in the blue house.

After-School Activities
Given the option of playing football after-school, my passion for the game prevents me from choosing some other extra-curricular activity in the given time. Therefore this semester me and some of the other seniors decided to start exercising our football skills to get over our summer laziness and improve our game in anticipation of the upcoming SAISA. The tournament was still a long way away but we were determined to put up a championship winning performance this year and so we decided to get a head start on our fitness and training. So we stayed back after school 2-3 times a week and also on went to school for community football on saturday's. There were many boys who showed up ranging from grades 8 to 12 which made going for practice worthwhile as sometimes we would play a proper match of football and at other times when there were more of the younger students we would concentrate on our passing and precision skills instead of tackling.

Community Service
From the very beginning of the semester we knew our goal was to organize a successful fundraiser in order to be able to support the children affected with the Cleft lip and palate disorder. We also decided that this year we would visit the children at the hospital regularly in order to get closer to our cause and understand it better. Unfortunately the children are too young for us to be able to interact with them however the hospital did let us visit them and see the patients we would be helping. I called the doctor and arranged the trip which would occur on a weekday in September. Once Mr.Pradeep ( Our supervisor) and I had made all the arrangements for the visit we focused all our attention on planning the fundraiser. It was my idea to hold a battle of the bands concert in order to raise funds because I felt like it was something that had not been done in our school recently. I also felt like this event would draw a large crowd and enable to raise the funds we required. I knew it would take a lot of collaboration, planning and hard work in order for us to be able to pull off such a large event. I was however up to the challenge to develop my organisational and leadership skills and see to it that everything went according to plan and we achieved our goals. At this point there were still many decisions to be made and therefore our CAS sessions were spent in group discussion about the event.

Founder's Day Assembly
For the founder's day assembly we were requested to put together a band and a performance as the final event of the assembly. Camie, Skylor, Maisoon and I decided to perform the song Hero by Nickelback and we only had about a week to practice. We stayed back after school almost every day of the week in order to rehearse and we showed perseverance and commitment to putting up a good show as well as worked collaboratively with each other and were willing to accomodate for everyone's needs for things like duration of rehearsals etc. We worked well together as a band and our first performance went quite well. This was the first time i performed on stage with a complete band in this school and so it helped me develop my skills as a lead guitarist for a band.
Founders day assembly (Creativity)

The rest of the month of September was dedicated to academics as we had the extended essay deadline at the end of September. I still managed to practice guitar in any spare time i found or as a tool to relax after a long day of school and academic stress.

SENIOR YEAR!! CAS goals for 2011-2012

2011-12 CAS goals
My last year of high school is finally here! its going to be a really hectic and challenging year but i'm ready to face the challenges. Even though its my last year, and academics are first priority i will still be involved in CAS activities. These are my objectives for the year :

1) Football Team: I hope to make it onto the football team again this year and contribute majorly towards the SAISA boys football tournament. I am already attending after-school football to get myself ready for the tournament which is still months away. I am extremely dedicated to football and take it seriously. I have already attended about 6-8 practice sessions, not having missed a single one. I have also led training sessions when the captain of the team has not been at training.I hope to be a footballer that the younger players can look up to and learn from as a senior. Taking up a role of leadership is a new challenge for me as previously i was one of the important players in the team but was never a leader. I feel more responsible this year and i think i can help the captain take our team to new heights and maybe even win the SAISA boys football tournament. I am working hard on developing my skills as a striker so i can score as many goals as possible and help lead my team to victory.

2) Cleft Palate Organization: This year, i plan to focus a lot more on community service since last year it was inadequate. As the leader of the cleft palate organisation i plan to organize trips to the hospital to meet the affected children and gain knowledge on the problems faced by these children from the doctors there. I also want to spread awareness about this problem among the students and teachers of OSC because the effects of this problem are not well known. Also one of our main goals this year is to raise a sufficient amount of funds so that a few children can get the surgeries that they cant afford. This year we are planning to have a concert in the auditorium to raise these funds. The planning is still in the initial stages and therefore there is not much to write about now.But in coming weeks, as it starts coming together i will post information about our plans. I also plan to create a blog specifically for the Cleft Palate organization which will have weekly updates about our meetings, discussions and plans. This envelops almost all the 8 critical learning outcomes.

3) Guitar : This year i want to develop my guitar skills further and be able to perform on stage more often as well as upload more guitar videos to YouTube to get feedback and non biased opinions. i have shown commitment to playing the guitar as i have self-taught myself almost everything i know about the guitar. I have never given up because of lack of a teacher, actually i prefer learning by myself as it is a challenge and gives me freedom to learn whatever i want. I am also responsible for however good i become in the end as i have had no help from  anyone. It is up to me to keep practicing and to get better at it.

4)Academics: Along with all these different activities i still need to manage my time and keep my grades up as this is the most important year of school. I have to be organized to submit my assignments on time and also have time to revise my lessons. I hope to do well enough to make it into a university with a decent scholarship amount. Keeping that in mind i know that i cannot spend too much time on extra-curricular activities. Therefore i dont plan on trying out too many new activities this year'.

I have a few other goals in mind for this year but they arnt concrete goals yet. i hope to take part in SAISA athletics as i did not get to do that last  year because of malaria. Also i plan on taking part in the drama productions my classmates have to put up for their IB drama grade. I took part in it last year and helped Fillipo with his play. This year too i plan on helping the classmates who ask for my assistance in acting or writing a play. I also hope to form a band this year but that depends on how many other musicians are willing to form a band this year.

These are my goals for senior year. For now it does not look like there will be too many more additions to this list but as the year progresses opportunities might present themselves, and if i do take part then i'll make sure to blog about it.And so senior year begins...wish me luck!
